Honoring Betty White and the Other Golden Girls

One last joke was played on us all by Betty White, as she decided to pass away a mere 17 days before what would have been her 100th birthday. This act served as the ultimate send-off from an actress who had entertained audiences with her humor for over 80 years.

The Golden Girls, a sitcom about four older women sharing a house in Florida, had its run completed almost 30 years ago. However, a whole new generation of young audiences, many of whom were not even born during the show's initial airing, have grown to love it due to its brilliant writing that continues to withstand the test of time.

Sadly, the passing of White marks the closure of the final chapter in the lives of The Golden Girls cast, as Estelle Getty, Bea Arthur, and Rue McClanahan had all passed away over a decade ago.

Let us now reflect on the careers of these four lovely ladies, shall we?

Dorothy, a retired substitute teacher with a sarcastic personality, a quick-temper, and a keen awareness of current events, was played by Arthur.

Her career in entertainment was started in 1947, with various Off-Broadway theatrical performances being undertaken by her.

Notably, she was awarded a Tony Award in 1966 for Best Featured Actress in the musical Mame.

The breakthrough into television came when she was cast as Maude on the sitcom All in the Family, which subsequently led to her own spin-off series.

This success was accompanied by multiple Golden Globes and Emmy Awards.

Following the conclusion of The Golden Girls in 1992, Arthur continued to make guest appearances on TV, including lending her voice to an episode of Futurama and portraying Larry David’s mother in Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Remaining in the public eye until the very end, she passed away from lung cancer in 2009 at the age of 86.
