American strategists considered blowing up a nuclear bomb of maximum capacity on the surface of the Moon with the sole goal of demonstrating superiority over the Russians.
Frustrated by their own falling behind in the space race with the Soviets, the Americans wanted to use the newly developed intercontinental ballistic rockets in order to realize their idea, which was basically causing an explosion which would be visible from Earth.
The idea isn’t so dangerous but despite that it goes on being stupid. Nevertheless, it would have been better if they had done that instead of dropping bombs over Hiroshima and Nagasaki. But what’s done is done and the fact that we missed this view is what it is. The only mushrooms to be seen on the moon will not be nuclear but moldy – that is, if we believe the people who consider our longtime sputnik to be made of cheese.
