The Cold War and the race for space between the US and the USSR motivated quite a few of the developments in modern day technology but also inspired quite a lot of dumb ideas. The widespread use of satellites during the 70’s changed traditions in navy tactics forever. Suddenly surprise attacks by sea became quite more difficult to pull off – the USSR’s observation network over the Atlantic ocean made it way more difficult for the capitalist forces and they were scratching their heads for a bit over how they could regain some element of surprise if a quick attack was necessary. Then Fred Redding from SRI International had an idea – a spaceship which is launched by a submarine.
We won’t go into the physics, suffice it to say that the initial plans had the head of the pilot sticking out of the fuselage of the prototype, equipped only with a helmet which was to protect the pilot from the vacuum in space. The idea drew quite a lot of attention but for some reason or another – nobody went on to develop.
