The Many Stereotypes in Emily in Paris
The life of a young American woman working in Paris is followed in Emily in Paris, and in the process, three countries have been upset: France, England, and Ukraine.
The portrayal of Parisians on the show has not pleased French viewers, as they are depicted as stereotypically rude, wearing berets, and prone to infidelity.
In England, people question why the British character, Alfie, is constantly shown drinking at pubs and watching soccer/football.
However, Ukrainians have expressed their displeasure the most, with the Minister of Culture even sending a letter to Netflix, asking why the Ukrainian character Petra (played by Kyiv's Daria Panchenko) had to be written as a shoplifter with no fashion sense and a fear of deportation.
Nonetheless, not all Ukrainians are offended. Ukrainian film producer Natalka Yakymovych noted that while she would have preferred Petra to be a Russian character with these negative traits, she argued that there is no rule exempting Ukrainians from such portrayals.
