The Equal Pay Problem

The reign of Queen Elizabeth II, starting from her coronation in 1953, is depicted in the critically acclaimed Netflix original series, The Crown.

It has received a total of 420 award nominations, including Emmys, Golden Globes, and British Academy Television Awards. To date, 129 awards have been won, with a Golden Tomato in 2020 for "Best Returning Series" among them, as this award apparently exists.

However, the show has faced criticism for paying Claire Foy, who portrays a young Queen Elizabeth, significantly less than her co-star Matt Smith, who plays Prince Philip. A petition signed by over 25,000 individuals demanded equal pay for Foy, prompting the show to initially defend the pay disparity. Eventually, the decision was reversed, and it was declared that no one would be paid more than the "Queen" moving forward.
