Pike and Spock are the Main Protagonists of the New Star Trek Spin Off
The fans of the original Star Trek series (and not only them) were very happy with the second season of Star Trek: Discovery. In an attempt to appeal to the fans of the old series, the second season of Discovery made quite the grand gesture to the original series from the 60s, which gave the rise to the epic saga with its countless spin offs. Anson Mount and Ethan Peck stepped in the shoes of captain Pike and the Spock the Vulcan surprisingly well, showing a very good chemistry going on between their characters. It inspired fans to ask for a spinoff with just the two of them, which would come as a continuation of the second season of Discovery and as the prequel to the original Star Trek. And now this wish is coming true!
CBS All Access officially announced the order of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. In it, aside from Anson Mount and Ethan Peck, we will see the return of Rebecca Romijn in the role of Number 1. For those who forgot – Pike is the predecessor to Kirk, captain of the iconic starship Enterprise and Spock is Spock, while Number 1 was the character appearing in the pilot episode of the 1965 Star Trek series but did not go any further. The three characters were acting in collaboration with the crew of the Discovery for about a year when Pike became the temporary captain of the ship.
“Fans fell in love with Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn and Ethan Peck in the roles of the iconic characters, depicted in the latest season of Star Trek: Discovery” said Julie McNamara, head of production on the CBS All Access online platform. “The new series will be the perfect addition to the franchise and will bring a new perspective as well as new adventures in the Star Trek universe”. You can hear what the actors are saying for yourself in the promo video regarding the news:
The headline is, of course, adapted from the intro of the original series and retained in TheNextGeneration –“These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds…” Akiva Goldsman will be the lead scriptwriter. According to the concept, Strange New Worlds will be rather more episodic than Discovery and Picard and will return to the optimism and the values of the old series. The idea is to appease the fans that weren’t so happy with the series making and the darker moods in the new spinoffs which may have been more modernistic but didn’t really fit the spirit of the franchise.
Strange New Worlds will be just one more spinoff in the making in a list which is becoming quite long. We are still waiting for the third season of Discovery and we already know that there is going to be a second season about Picard. Short Treks are short anthological epsiodes in the Star Trek universe which may turn up any time. There’s also ongoing work on new series – the animation called The Lower Decks and the Michelle Yeoh offshoot which focuses on Section 31. In any case we are yet to see when each of these will be released but it is simply brilliant that CBS All Access is flooding us with content even though we tend to be a bit critical towards them.
