Alex DeLarge – A Clockwork Orange
Alex from A Clockwork Orange (both the movie and the book) is among the most popular psychopaths not only in fiction but, well, ever. It’s hard to say if he’s guilty for what he is or for what’s happening to him. He lives in a world where crime and murder are everyday things and feeling sorry is an unclear concept from a time long past. In such a dark future a person couldn’t but go a little insane in order to keep living, and Alex is quite crazy.
Maybe that’s why he becomes the guinea pig in an experiment intended towards the eradication of the will to do evil. Unfortunately, his brain processing only deepens his mental troubles quite a lot. Still though, along the whole while we can’t but sympathize with him to the extent that at points we may even see parts of our own selves in him. Psycho or not, he’s the character who earned A Clockwork Orange its place among the classics.
