Behemoth
The Master and Margarita – Mihael Bulgakow, issued by "Narodna Kultura", "Profizdat", "Interprint", "Abagar" & "Fama";
Movies (1972, 1989, 1994); TV series "Mater and Margarita" 2005
Behemoth is a huge male cat (with the size of a pig) who speaks, walks on his hind legs, carries a gun and as part of the Devil's entourage – he's quite evil, damned and loves frustrating people. He loves chess, vodka and marinated mushrooms. Although he's the least respected of Satan's companions, he certainly is the funniest and the most offbeat of the bunch. He shows a comic tendency towards philosophizing and witty humor, which he often combines with obscene gestures, commanding attitude and aggression. Nevertheless, he loves being scratched on the neck and other such kinds of cat pleasures are not unfamiliar to him. His characters carries a note of tragedy, because he's damned to always wander as Satan's servant.
Behemoth is inspired by many sources – starting from the Old Testament and Christian mythology and reaching up to the cat which lived with Bulgakow and his second wife. He's funny and interesting enough in the book so as to achieve cult status but the 2005 miniseries makes things really unforgettable.
